Altars & Altar Sets
Most of the time, new witches cobbled together their first altars and altar sets from various sources. A second hand table, an old wine glass, a spare candle holder, an old brass incense burner, and a chipped plate might make up any new witch's first tools.
Though personal altars can take any form, altars used in Amazon rituals are usually round, and placed in the center of our circles. This gives every woman equal access to it during seasonal rituals. The altar is set with incense in the East, a candle in the South, a chalice in the West, and a plate in the North. A Goddess statue or candle is placed in the middle, as she presides over all of our rituals. Most of our altars include a drawer for storing our magical tools. |
Along with crafting her Tarot Cards, Book of Shadows, and Altar, women in the Amazon Tradition also craft their own altars & altar sets. Most often the altar set is crafted in clay and fired in matching glaze colors, but some prefer to create glass or recycled material sets. There is no "right" way. The altar sets in our tradition are relatively small, and include an incense holder, a candle holder, a chalice, an offering plate, and a pitcher and bowl as utility pieces. We tend to create small sets so they don't completely cover our altars, as we tend to have many other working elements on our altars. Crafting smaller altar sets also makes them easier to transport to group rituals and festival.
