Drums, Rattles, Rain Sticks, and Pipe Chimes/Bell
In modern Wiccan/Pagan communities, drumming is as much a part of ritual as casting the circle. However, because drumming has traditionally been the domain of men, very few women feel comfortable when they begin learning to drum. Yet, as women begin walking the Amazon path their confidence begins to grow and they become better drummers for Goddess rituals. In the Amazon Tradition, the drum and rattle are associated with the Matriarch Goddess and crafted in the Winter season. They represent the heartbeat of the Grandmothers that we honor in this season, and the grounding we receive from the Earth.
Building good drums is not the easiest craft to master, which explains why they are so expensive to buy. Still, it is well worth developing the skills to build frame drums at the very least. They are the easiest drums for beginners to craft and to play. When you actually end up playing a drum you made with your own hands, well there's just nothing more magical! Still, it may be easier to start by crafting rattles and rain sticks to use in ritual. These are associated with the Mistress and Mother Goddesses, and crafted in the Summer and Autumn seasons. These can be made out of a variety of materials, including recycled objects and formed leather. The point is to be able to create meditative and festive rhythms to enhance rituals and festive occasions. |
